There’s been a lot of talk about how allo fans represent Jon’s asexuality and the need to use sensitivity readers, and I’ve said before if you’re not sure about how you’ve written something, my ask box and messages are open. So I’m officially put it out there: If any of my allo followers want a sensitivity reader for their TMA fic, contact me and I’d be happy to help! I’m a sex-repulsed, romance-repulsed aroace, so that’s where most of my experience with the identity lies. I won’t read pwp or dub-con, but I’m fine with some sexual content.

oh! Also I should take this opportunity to air my crack theory about Night Watch, to wit: Ned Coates is a time-traveling grown-up Young Sam.

My evidence:

Ned is the only other Watchman who is new to the squad, and new to Ankh-Morpork.

He is supposedly the only person who knew the real John Keel, but he never calls Sam out for it. If there ever was a real Ned Coates, and he really knew John Keel, we only have Ned’s word for it.

When he and Sam spar, he fights just as dirty as Sam does, and claims John Keel taught him the tricks Sam uses himself.

He’s protective of Vimesy, moreso than other Watchmen though he’s known them all for the same length of time.

He is clearly up to SOMETHING; Sam thinks he’s one of the real revolutionaries plotting to overthrow Winder, but none of the other revolutionaries interact with him or seem to know him that I can recall.

When Sam admits he’s a time traveler, he’s unfazed; his question “From how far back?” would make perfect sense as “from how far back in my timeline, where you are my dad?

He supposedly dies in the last fight, but Sam doesn’t see it, and Sam supposedly died in that fight too.

Lu-Tze is 100% good enough to have two time-travelers operating at the same time without breaking the timeline; he does, however, worry about the unusual strain he’s creating.

So, let’s say an adult Young Sam has a time-travel accident. Possibly after some sort of major falling-out with his dad, one that’s got him still pissed off at him. And now he’s stuck in a vastly more shitty version of the city he grew up in, and the versions of his dad he has met so far are a) a dumb kid and b) kind of a dick. He is not having a great time. He really, really wants to go home, but first he has a revolution to see through.

Viewed that way, Ned Coates makes a lot of sense.

Gonna hang one of these outside the door of my condo and dare the HOA to complain

History: The Minoan civilization had a rapid decline following the eruption of a volcanic island close to Crete where they had settled. The eruption was so large its effects were felt all the way in China.

Me: Oh yeah. The Mediterranean had a lot of problems with volcanoes every few thousand years or so. So why was this one special?

What the island looks like today:

image

Me………….. oh

This is still an active volcano. It’s an active caldera, mostly submerged, surrounded by a ring of land, and with a cluster of small volcanic islands in the middle - they’re basically magma that overflowed and solidified, the caldera itself rising. And hey, last time volcanic islands emerged in that spot, the Minoan eruption happened, fucking everything. (To be fair, it took ~20k years, and now it’s only been 2k. Man, geological time is WILD.)

The Piper -
Based on episode 7 of The Magnus Archives (my new obsession)

Tolkien and Lewis are both products of their times & their sexism exerts itself in different ways but my favorite is how every individual Narnia book has the same number of named female characters as the entire LOTR series combined. It’s so fucking funny.

Second place goes to Lewis being deathly allergic to the concept of girls touching a sword and Tolkien just handing one to Éowyn and telling her to go fuck up the witch king

Lets be real im willing to forgive any and all period sexism from tolkien for eowyn. “I am no man”??? In the 50s??? I would have gone buckshit reading this while my useless husband sat for dinner commenting on the commies getting dangerous. Also a warrior woman who actually got ptsd and subsequent treatment and “And then her heart changed, or at least she understood it, and the winter passed and the sun shone upon her” and “i will love all things that grow and are not barren” ??? John Rohn Rohn really poured his heart and trauma into the girl-with-sword trope and no occurrence of it ever since has been that good.

Please watch this.

[Video ID: A TikTok by user @scarlet_may.1; the video is 60 seconds long, has no audio, and is called “Deaf Ears In A Hearing World”.

Scene 1 (Title card): The main character (we’ll call her MC from now on) grabs her bag, keys, and mask and leaves her house.

Scene 2: MC removes her mask and sits down at a table. Two of her friends are talking with expressions and gestures that make it look like they’re complaining, or maybe gossiping. MC signs, “What’s wrong?” One of her friends signs, “Nothing, I’ll explain later.” MC looks disappointed, and she turns to look at her laptop instead of talking with her friends.

Scene 3: A teacher is speaking to the class. The teacher walks in front of the ASL interpreter, blocking MC’s view. MC signs, “Can you please not walk in front of the interpreter? I can’t see.” The teacher nods yes, but then walks in front of the interpreter again. MC looks exasperated. Then the interpreter signs to indicate that the bell is ringing, so MC packs up her laptop, puts her mask on, and leaves class.

Scene 4: MC is in the hallway, looking at her phone. A stranger gets her attention and tries to talk to her, but MC indicates that she can’t hear, and instead pulls out a piece of paper and a pen and offers it to the stranger so that they can write what they want to say. The stranger scowls and shakes their head, then waves goodbye and walks away. MC rolls her eyes in frustration.

Scene 5: MC is in her car now, at a drive thru restaurant. She holds up her phone so that the employee can see it, but the employee calls their manager instead. The manager shows up and takes MC’s order, then returns with a drink, saying “Sorry!” MC smiles and takes the drink. MC is obviously trying to be polite, but at this point she’s reaching the end of her patience.

Scene 6: MC returns home and sits on her couch, looking exhausted. She scrolls through TikTok only to find that none of the videos have closed captions! She throws her phone down in frustration. /End ID]
